This is part of a collection of songs that I composed for my friend's Peggle-like game, "Ice Breakers". These songs represent my first foray into video game composition. To play and hear the songs in-game, please visit www.nsparisi.com/portfolio/icebreakers
The theme is literally my first full composition for a video game. When agreeing to do the game's music, my friend told me that he wanted the songs built around an "ice cavern" theme; thus, I tried to pick instrumentation that would represent such an area. The instruments that came to mind first were harp, vibes, and flute. Clearly, the harp didn't make it into the song (my first draft of a song was "too creepy", so it was cut), but the others did.
The form of the song is simple--a theme with three solo interjections. I think the violin solo is particularly entertaining because of the unconventionality of the style the instrument is playing in and dissonance of the actual solo lines--for me it's almost painful to listen to sometimes. Likely it was loosely influenced by Ornette Coleman (not because of the pain, heh).
