I pretty much agree with Muurgh except a couple of things

Basically what he said was true, this sounds more like an ending than an opening title, but the challenge was to write something that could be played for both an opening and an ending and reaslitically, without it being put to a video, there's no particular way to judge if it would work for one and not the other. It doesn't however, quite fit with the way I understood the game to be, which was a rather dark and tragic story. The track somewhat floats around the middle of two emotions without deciding to go in one direction in the end.
I have to say, I put this on just now to listen again and it was pretty perfectly produced. It was very professional sounding, so much so that I forgot what game this was meant to be for, instead, I thought more of Valkyrie Profiles and stuff like that. I disagree with what Muurgh says about the synth. A sound is a sound, so if it works, go with it. There's a reason electo-pop is still popular today and likewise, old school games had a certain charm to them that can't really be replaced. I think you fused the old sound rather well with the more modern VSTs. He also thinks of lights... I think they sound more like seagulls... but that's probably not too relevant, lol.
So yeah, I really like this track, and it's a shame that I feel that it doesn't suit this game. I think it's good enough for another title, definitely, so don't look to poorly on the harsh rating. Had it fit for the story, I think I would have given it a 6.
Great work, keep it up!
One of the few submissions with a solid melody.

I really like what you've created here. The string sounds you used are very nice and the melody is quite powerful. It really reminds me of something from Chrono Trigger....
The piano interlude is very abrupt...could've segwayed into that better, imo.
I agree with Muuurgh about this song fitting more as an ending. It's a little too pretty for the game's main theme.
On it's own, I'd rate this song a 5.5-6, but for this particular competition a 4.
More End than Beginning

arstgigas,
I love this song, and I almost feel like I shouldn't like it as much as I do... but I won't harp on that point. First, I'm a big fan of the electronic background noise throughout the song, especially when it trails off into silence in a couple of spots. Very cool. Second, the song flows extremely well with a possible exception being going into the "interlude" (or whatever you want to call it) midway through the piece (though, coming out of that is smooth). I think that the electronic noises plus the nice melody and parts beneath the melody from the strings make for a smooth composition.
Now, the reason why I gave you only four stars is because I think that this composition works for an ending theme, but not for a main theme. I can see this during the credits or during the emotional final moments of the game, but not in the beginning--it pulls too much on the heart strings and isn't exciting enough. Also, I was going to rate you down a little bit because the electronic noises sound way too old-school for what I assume is supposed to be a modern game. In a... hmmm... 32-bit world max this would be perfect; however, it's not, and more modern sounds should be substituted. That being said, though, I don't know if you could really predict a better sound because it sounds like the electric noises are representing something visual. Whenever I hear them, I think of light beams or shooting stars, but something that may be more modern in the game would be, say, loud insect flying noises or something. Like I said, though, there's no way to predict what should be there, so I treated the noises as substitutes to other noises that would be executed in the same fashion.
Best of luck!
