Description

My submission to the Composition Combat contest - given the bleak themes and motifs listed in the description, I figured that an equally bleak theme would be apt.

Reviews and discussion

Maybe as in-game background music

Sum it up like this...

Pros:

I like how the bass sound doubles as an alarm.

When the bass and snare drums come in, it sounds pretty awesome for a while.

Some cool sounds.

Cons:

2 chords for a 3:31 song is bound to get boring and/or annoying.

Takes too long to get to the best part with the full mix coming together.

Lacks any kind of melody.

Some of the voices sound a little shabby. Some reverb or other effects would go a long way.

Good sounds, but needs sprucing

dxnero,

I'm going to review this by saying almost the same things that I did in quetz's song review: I like some of the details, including the panning and some of the sounds that you use, but the lack of melody is my main concern, especially in this contest.  The title and the "bleakness" that you were going for work well with what you have, especially with that cool marching through soggy mud/grasslands sample you have at the beginning, yet as a main theme I don't see this working.  What I personally look for is a melody that will stick with me and have me humming after the first few times I hear it, and your piece doesn't do it for me.  In all honesty, I think it repeats elements that are, after a while, and please pardon me for the word (though, I want to be completely honest in my reviews), rather boring, really.  Something needs to grab me besides that great sound in the beginning, because otherwise it becomes kind of forgettable.

I hope that this helps!  Good luck!
