Need iPhone testing

quintin3265 · April 05, 2013 at 15:03 UTC

Does any of our regular users happen to own or have access to an iPhone for some quick testing? It's been two weeks since I added Javascript logging, and the logs are now filled with 147 errors, about 75% of which appear to be from iPhones. They have messages like 'ReferenceError: Can''t find variable: MyIPhoneApp_ModifyShowModelessDialog' and 'QUOTA_EXCEEDED_ERR: DOM Exception 22: An attempt was made to add something to storage that exceeded the quota.'

I have no idea what these mean, but I do know that whenever an error is recorded in the database, it was a fatal error that prevents the user from doing anything else on that page. If these errors appear on all iPhones, then there is a segment of users who effectively can't use the site.

If someone has access to an iPhone and can take a look at the site to confirm it works, I would much appreciate it. The "quota_exceeded_err" sounds like the phone is out of memory or something, which might mean these errors only occur on old model iPhones. If that's the case, too much time would be needed to solve a problem that will eventually go away. But if it affects current iPhones, like 4th and 5th generation ones, then it needs to be addressed.

I'll try logging in a bunch of times with my 4th Gen iTouch sometime after Monday.

FINALLY found the time out the site with my iPod Touch 4G, and here's what I've found:

When you open any page on the site using Safari, the site is all zoomed-in, as such:

When I first opened the website, it caused my iPod to lag a lot; apparently the front page uses up a lot of the devices memory?
However, when I hit the 'play' button on a song's page, it actually started playing as normal, like it was on a PC! Pretty amazing, IMO.
Even better, when I hit the "Download MP3" button, it took me to this Quicktime player:

Basically, it's like watching a Youtube video on an iTouch - this means I can totally listen to new remixes while I'm out on my porch swing. :D
I have a few other mobile devices in my house, but I can't use them at the moment. I'll try to check them out later.

It'd be nice if the site could wrap to mobile devices (I know the detection of a mobile phone is done using an useragent detection thing but other then that no clue haha)

Thanks, Shred, for your time spent on this. The problem with testing mobile devices is that they are expensive, and this sort of trial and error that Shred just did after every change would take weeks if I asked him to continually look at every change I made. On Android phones, the site does not display like it does on iPhones.

Unfortunately, I don't know what can be done about this issue at this time. Fortunately, iPhones represent a very small fraction of all visitors to the site - and uploaders are more likely to be using a full computer. If at some point the balance sheet can be turned around into the black, then perhaps I can buy an iPhone and get them working the same as Android and Windows devices do.
