Forums: Reduce Post Permissions of non-admins/moderators

Huddini · March 14, 2013 at 20:35 UTC

Check this out, I can sticky, or announce, or even global announce(oh no!!) a thread in this particular forum section!

You should probably take this post permission off of regular users like me

Edit: Keep the lock power though. Real handy for users that may have a problem they posted but the problem goes away.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize that this was a problem until you reported it. I think it's fixed now; let me know if it recurs.

By the way, if you know anyone who is good with administering systems (as opposed to developing them), let me know, as it would be nice to have someone to take care of these issues.

As to the lock idea, I'm not sure that should be left, because then people could lock thread when people started to disagree with them. They could post a final response and then lock the thread. I think it would probably be better if everyone was entitled to their say without being afraid of someone locking a thread on them.

For this forum section I don't have the powers anymore, so that's pretty much resolved. Can you un-announce this thread too while you're at it? xP

You should make sure the permissions for each forum section has the same ones for normal users like this Bugs forum section just in case. Phpbb is an annoyance when it comes to this, but once you get it all set up it's good pretty much forever :P

As for the locking thing...Ehhh, while there is the *potential* for that to happen, I only mean to have the powers available in certain sections (such as the forum section this thread is in now). Should've been clear on that. Users should have the power to lock threads when their problems have been resolved so viewers don't have to think the thread topic still needs answering, but that's just me.

As for the whole administering thing...If I were you, I wouldn't trust anyone you haven't had a chance to know, e.g. an outsider like me (in the name of cautiousness and security). I'd go ahead and volunteer myself and show you I have some experience running phpbb forums but I wouldn't want that kind of job anyway LOL...I'd just prefer helping you with suggestions instead :)

Well, our world today seems to go overboard with security pretty often. I agree with some security measures, but there are also some things where people take security too seriously for what is at stake. For example, I don't need Steam or facebook asking me to "confirm my account" with various annoying tasks like checking your cell phone or responding to an E-Mail every time you use a new computer. If I were trying to transfer funds from a bank account, I would want to have a strong password. For facebook, what is the worst someone will do? Make a Wall post with spam I can delete later?

This site is similar. There is more to gain (a site with its boards working properly and well-used) than there is to lose, and the number of pageviews has doubled in the past week. If the assistant were to delete something maliciously, then I just restore yesterday's backup and report the issue to his or her ISP so that the ISP terminates the malicious helper's connection for terms of service violation.

You help is very much appreciated, even if you only report bugs. However, if you (or anyone else) does want to volunteer to moderate, secure and promote these forums, you can do what would be done for any other job where an employer knows nothing about the applicant: send your résume in a private message.
