How to know when an uploaded song is done converting?
Huddini · March 14, 2013 at 04:49 UTC
Hello,at the time of this post I am being told by a song page of an uploaded song that it is not available for in-browser previewing.
When do I know that the song is finished converting to the .mp3 format for viewers to listen to?
Here's the song in question:

Hey Huddini,
Welcome to our humble site!
That message appears because of how the system was designed. Converting files and determining their length and bitrate takes a while, and if that was done immediately after people uploaded, they could have a 1-minute or longer delay in their browser. People would then click "refresh" or close the window, thinking the site crashed, making the problem worse.
To solve that, a job kicks off in the background every four hours. It computes many things: what version number is the latest for a song, how many views a song has, what its average rating is, and (if this is the first time the song has been seen) converts it to MP3 format. If you uploaded the file at 3:59AM, it would be converted a minute later, but if you uploaded it at 4:01am, it would take 3 hours and 59 minutes. During that time, the song is available for download, but now for streaming.
Since you asked, there is obviously some confusion, so I'll see if I can make the above clearer in the upload process.
