Auto-conversion of audio files enabled

2009-10-20 · quintin3265

Historical announcement; references to uploads, registration and other interactive services describe the original site.

Yesterday, we added the ability to auto-convert audio files to .mp3 format. When a file is uploaded in a different format, it is automatically compressed to .mp3 format for browser streaming. Both the converted MP3 and the original file are then available for download from the song's details page. For video files, this feature already existed.

When uploading new songs, you should upload them in lossless formats if possible. FLAC, WAV, and other lossless formats are automatically converted to 192 kbps MP3 using LAME, a popular mp3 encoder. Uploading lossless formats allows the listener to select which quality in which (s)he would like to experience your music. For Composition Combat, where people will be judging your work on its quality, lossless formats are especially important.

To accommodate the new features, the upload limit has been increased to 200MB. At some point soon, we'll be updating the statistics so that artists can identify which formats of their files are being downloaded individually.
